Dorian started to smile and placed his free hand on her cheek as they kissed. His heart leaped in his chest from her reply. However, it started to sink at the next bit. But…? He slid back onto the couch and placed the box in his lap, taking her hands into his as she spoke. He kept his eyes studying her face, trying to figure out what she was… worried about. What is wrong?
“With…” he spoke softly as the wheels in his mind spun a million miles an hour. “We are…?” he couldn’t grasp the simple concept, at all. Then it dawned on him. March. His eyes shifted down to her stomach. Alice always had a small-ish figure. Now he realized the slight bump to her stomach. He brought his eyes back up to hers and gave a small smile.
“Alice, nothing could make me change the way I feel for you. I’m… surprised but… it makes sense. I just… I never thought that…” he trailed off and kissed her hands. Dorian picked the small box again and took the ring out to show her again. “This doesn’t change my mind, at all. I still want this…” He gently took her left hand and hovered the ring over her nail then looked into her eyes. “Alice Liddell, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. To be there for you through these next few months, to care for you even if you will be stubborn about doing certain things and not laying in bed. I want the petty fights about colors and… and names. I want to be a good husband… and a good father.” He swallowed hard and kept looking at her eyes full of emotion, “will you marry me, Alice?”
Alice watched him work through everything, she’d already done the whole process of when? how? and it had settled on her. but a visible look of relief crossed her features and as he repeated his question she nodded. “Yes, of course I will.” She nodded, using her other hand to wipe her eyes again, her heart felt like it was beating so rapidly and her mind was spinning over everything. He was proposing to her. She was staring at him, in complete and utter disbelief mixed with joy. “I love you so much Dorian, you’re going to be a wonderful husband and amazing father.” She laughed, purely from joy.
“I love you.” She let him put the ring on her finger and then she wrapped her arms around him tightly and hugged him, before pulling back enough to kiss him again. Deeply, passionately, lovingly. She broke away only when she needed to breathe and then placed a few soft kisses on his lips. “So much.”
“I can’t imagine a better person to spend the rest of my life with, Dorian. Nor a better father for any child.” Since, although Jefferson treated Grace very lovingly, Dorian would be better simply for the fact that she was absolutely they wouldn’t have to split up to prove the child with a safe environment. “It will be absolutely wonderful all of it will be.”
